Better Lives With Care.Wallet: Chron’s Disease in Ireland

Chronic conditions can be something patients deal with for life and those that affect the digestive system can range from irritating to debilitating. Chron’s disease is one of the more common chronic digestive system conditions that affecst the gut, particularly parts of the large intestine, small intestine, or both. The cause of the condition is still quite a mystery, many theories attribute it to genetics and triggers that include bacteria, viruses, diet, smoking, and even stress.

Ireland has a rather high rate of Chron’s disease with an estimated 5.9 cases discovered in 2011 for every 100,000 citizens when compared to 0.1-0.16 for every 100,000 worldwide. The disease is more prevalent in children than other chronic conditions that affect the digestive system. Chron’s disease often has two peaks in the lives of those affected. The first being between 15 and 35 years of age and a smaller peak between 50 to 70.

Chron’s disease can have numerous symptoms and signs, many of which may not be active all the time or at the same time. These symptoms include fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, mouth sores, reduced appetite, blood in the stool, and inflammation. Sever effects of Chron’s disease can even lead to kidney stones, low iron, delayed growth in children, and inflammation of the skin, eyes, joints, bile ducts, and the liver. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Chron’s disease as of yet. This means the only way to manage the condition is to treat the symptoms and practice preventative measures. After observation, physicians often provide medication in conjunction with special dietary plans. In extreme cases such as bowel obstructions surgery may even be necessary. Because it is a chronic life-long condition that can’t be cured, it needs to be managed and observed, which can be done with a solution such as the Care.Wallet.
