Better Lives With Care.Wallet: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) in the US

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rather rare autoimmune disorder. CIPD presents itself with peripheral neuropathy that is progressive and can often be debilitating. It is important that CIPD is diagnosed early to avoid too much permanent damage to a patient’s nerves. Typically, around 50% of patients with CIPD present a weakness in proximal and distal motions.

There is an estimated 0.7 to 1.6 new cases of CIPD per 100,000 persons per year in the United States and 4.8 to 8.9 ongoing cases per 100,000 persons at any given time. (AJMC: The American Journal of Managed Care) CIPD is the most common of treatable chronic neuropathies around the world, but it is still rare. The median age for the occurrence of CIPD falls around 58 years old and more often affects men.

Treatment for CIPD consists of mainly drug therapies including corticosteroids, immunoglobulin, and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). Based on many factors such as severity and affected areas, physical therapy and improving muscle strength can help to prevent permanent disability. Observation and monitoring treatment responses are important when treating patients with CIPD because changes that negatively impact recovery may occur suddenly and treatment would need to be adjusted accordingly.

Digital healthcare tools like Care.Wallet can help patients to be better informed about the disease, preventative measures, and treatment plans by having access to them readily available. For example, it can be handy to have the European Federation of Neurological Societies and the Peripheral Nerve Society (EFNS/PNS) diagnostic criteria on hand to help with diagnosis in areas that lack the resources or expertise to otherwise detect CIPD.
