Better Lives with Care.Wallet: Binge Eating Disorder in the US

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is characterized by repeated episodes of the uncontrollable intake of unusually large amounts of food in a short period of time. These episodes are accompanied by feelings of guilt, shame, and psychological distress. A report by the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED) and the Academy for Eating Disorders informs us that 9% of the U.S. population, or 28.8 million Americans, have an eating disorder in their lifetime.

People with BED may eat a lot of food in a short amount of time, even if they aren’t hungry. Emotional stress or distress often plays a role and might trigger a period of binge eating. BED is linked to an increased risk of weight gain and obesity, as well as associated diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. There are also other health risks, including sleep related issues, chronic pain, mental health problems, and a lower quality of life. Professional support and treatment from health professionals specializing in the treatment of binge eating disorders, including psychiatrists, nutritionists, and therapists, can be the most effective way to address BED.

Care.Wallet can be configured to help with the treatment, prevention, and everyday support of patients with BED around the world. Patients who suffer from BED have a need for continuity of care through support from physicians and the ability to get the recommendations they need in a timely manner. With Care.Wallet, this and more can be made possible. The How Are You Feeling Today (HAYFT) Care.Card will allow doctors, family members, and others to track a patient’s health conditions, and provide recommendations accordingly. Utilizing the Care.Wallet, Care.Circles can be created for family and friends to stay informed and involved in the patient’s care journey. The doctor will be able to change the treatments and prescriptions based on the data received from the Care.Wallet.

Care.Wallet will allow the scheduling of appointments with doctors in the easiest way for everyone. People will not only be able to schedule an appointment but even book non-medical transportation to get there. Care.Wallet will replace tens of hours of waiting for a visit to the doctor’s.
