Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease that causes chronic cough, shortness of breath, and the production of excessive sputum. It is a progressive disease that has a tendency to get worse over time and may be debilitating. COPD more often affects those who are 35 years old and over. One of the primary causes of COPD in adults is long-term exposure to lung irritants. In Canada, and many nations worldwide, tobacco smoke is the leading irritant which leads to COPD.
According to surveys in 2019, it was found that around 842,600 Canadians had reported that they were diagnosed by a physician as suffering from COPD. For individuals living with COPD, it is often that they find the disease may limit their mobility which impacts their ability to engage in typical daily life activities. Currently, there is no cure for COPD. Treatment of COPD relies on managing its symptoms with medications, homeopathic therapies, and changes to one’s lifestyle. The key to slowing down the progression of COPD and managing its symptoms is early detection, primarily through lung function testing.
Care.Wallet can be configured to help people with COPD in managing their health.
