Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic condition that is characterized by severe pain and burning sensations, often occurring in extremities. The condition is categorized into three types depending on the features of potential causation for the condition. CRPS type 1 presents development as a result of trauma, such as fractures, crush injuries, or legions without evidence of nerve damage. Type 2 is development of the condition post nerve damage. Type 3 occurs when there is no discernible signs or symptoms prior to the condition that brings forth any other diagnosis.
According to studies in The Lancet, referenced by the CRPS Network Australia, it is estimated that 1 in 3800 people are affected by CRPS per year. It is also 3-4 times more common for it to occur in women and occurrence peaks at patients of the ages between 37 – 50. Of the cases of CRPS, 45% occurred after various types of fractures, 18% from sprains, 12% from elective surgeries, and less than 10% are spontaneous with unknown causes.
There is no known cure from CRPS, and even the root cause of the conditions is still being debated. Treatment for the conditions consists of treating its symptoms. The symptoms of CRPS can include burning sensations, skin over-sensitivity, varying skin temperatures, change in skin coloration, change in skin texture, changes in hair growth patterns, sweeling or stiffness of effected joints, and a decrease in motor ability in the area. Treating these symptoms often requires a mixture of medications, either oral or topical, and physical therapy. In severe cases surgery may help to reduce symptoms. Because treatments are individualized and may require observation over long periods of time, digital health solutions can help patients better care for themselves.
